Year 4 Overview |
In Year 4, approximately 12 hours per term is allocated to the explicit teaching of The Arts. The Arts include Dance, Drama, Media, Music and Visual Arts. It is recognised that students learn about The Arts and through The Arts. In this way, specific art skills and knowledge are developed through explicit planning for The Arts, but students also enjoy opportunities to express creativity through other curriculum areas.
How is our community like a great artwork? (VA) |
Description of unit including timing and main ideas and how it might link to other curriculum areas
Fruit Cross Sections (VA) |
Students use contour lines to define shapes and simplify their work to create abstract artworks. They discuss the principles of art they have used in their artwork.
The Art of Mathematics (VA) |
Through exploration of patterns in numbers, students extend these patterns to visual patterns and create a display of work to show the beauty of Mathematical patterns. Principles of art: repetition
Land Art, Garbage Art (VA, ME) |
Students explore the elements of art through examining examples of Land Art by a number of artists. They consider the messages artists might be communicating through their art. They construct their own Land Art and create a video to explain their work, the elements of art they have used and the meaning they are communicating through their art.
Students look at examples of art, particularly sculpture and installations, that reuse waste materials. They construct their own works using recycled materials.

A Convict Christmas (MU, DR) |
This musical play provides an opportunity for students to develop Drama and Music skills through participating in a culmination of their History studies and a Christmas celebration. A Convict Christmas (from Matthew Perry Publications) celebrates Christmas on board a convict prison ship while learning more about the transportation of convicts from England to Australia. This show, filled with Aussie bush songs and traditional carols, culminates in an optional Nativity. Lots of small speaking parts, great history, and easy scenes.
